Both a technical and a business process, IBM defines it as “discovery, cleansing, monitoring, transforming and delivery of data from a variety of sources.” Data integration allows the combination and analysis of data across isolated "silos" where it would normally be difficult to collaborate. It’s about efficiently managing data and making it available to those who need it. What is Data Integration?ĭata integration means combining information from various sources into something useful. Never before has so much machine-readable data existed, but organizations still struggle to find ways to use this mass of information to aid in decision-making. "The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data."Īs the quotations above illustrate, the creation, manipulation, and analysis of data represent a significant challenge for contemporary organizations. Daniel Keys Moran, American computer programmer and science fiction writer. “You can have data without information, but you cannot have information without data.” Mitchell Kapor, co-founder of Lotus and co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “Getting information off the Internet is like taking a drink from a firehose.” #SAFE FME SOFTWARE#We're continuing to expand what’s possible with FME, the data integration software with the best spatial support in the world. Our passion for freeing data was ignited, and we've been on a mission to help people experience that freedom ever since. We didn't start with a business plan, but we did have a desire to help. Often, an incredible amount of information was lost in the process. Sure, it was technically possible to share the maps back then, but only after hours fighting with the data. Safe Software began in a basement in 1993, helping forestry companies exchange maps with the provincial government. If you are interested in helping out please get in touch at the OpenGeo contact form.FME (the Feature Manipulation Engine) is a data integration tool used for transforming data. And of course additional funding will enable us to prioritize the work and get it done faster. We are still in the early stages, hoping to put together a rough prototype relatively soon, but beta testers in the future will be appreciated. If you are a user of both FME and GeoServer we’d love to hear from you with input on how we could work together to make your life easier (or you can just give us encouragement ). #SAFE FME FULL#In time the GeoServer community will definitely build the capability to handle the full community schema transformation natively, but integrating with FME should provide a transitional path, and FME will always be ahead in terms of the most advanced translations. With a few key improvements the combined solution should solve the ‘Community Schema’ problem that Ron Lake recently brought up better than any software in world. This allows each piece to solve the area they excel at – GeoServer in OGC standards and web output formats, FME at complex data conversions and translations. Our end goal is to enable FME Server and GeoServer to work together seamlessly. While many people are making things work with the software now, we figure that a few improvements towards tighter integration could be a big win. We’ve both been hearing more about organizations using FME to solve their data conversion challenges and then making the results available to the world using the OpenGeo Stack. OpenGeo and Safe Software have been talking about working together to make life easier for users of FME and GeoServer.
